A wee lesson for the constabulary

I doubt that the police have heard of the Streisand Effect.

I also doubt our judiciary have heard of it either. We are dealing with the real world here and the real world wants to know stuff and they want to know it right now.

The real world has moved on from 1985. Bill Hodge was wrong the other night on TV saying the courts were catching up with technology. The reason is the “Streisand Effect”.

The Police, by charging me ensured that the secret they have alleged I breached became the secret that everyone wanted to know. I didn’t do that, they did, by charging a blogger who writes articles everyday and who conducts most of his life very publicly.

In case they don’t know how to click on links the Streisand Effect is described on Wikipedia as;

The Streisand effect is an Internet phenomenon where an attempt to censor or remove a piece of information has the unintended consequence of causing the information to be publicized widely and to a greater extent than would have occurred if no censorship had been attempted. As early as 1993, “The Net treated censorship as damage and routed around it.” Examples of such attempts include censoring a photograph, a number, a file, or a website (for example via a cease-and-desist letter). Instead of being suppressed, the information receives extensive publicity, often being widely mirrored across the Internet, or distributed on file-sharing networks.

Mike Masnick originally coined the term Streisand effect in reference to a 2003 incident in which Barbra Streisand unsuccessfully sued photographer Kenneth Adelman and Pictopia.com for US$50 million in an attempt to have the aerial photograph of her mansion removed from the publicly available collection of 12,000 California coastline photographs, citing privacy concerns. Adelman stated that he was photographing beachfront property to document coastal erosion as part of the California Coastal Records Project. As a result of the case, public knowledge of the picture increased substantially and it became popular on the Internet, with more than 420,000 people visiting the site over the next month.

Good work Cameron with what your doing re the name suppression laws.
From your days at ABG you must remember that a graph should have both axis labelled why haven’t you labelled your X axis?
Also had you thought about asking for name suppression? If you had asked for suppression and been granted it, would you be in contempt if you had then named yourself or shown photos of yourself? That would have made a real mockery of the situation.
Good luck in the Kaimanawas.

It’s my graph and I will so whatever I want. And anyway if had had Weuston as a Maths teacher followed by \”Buster\” Keegan you wouldn’t be flash at math either.

From wikipedia:

Pinko is a derogatory term for a person regarded as sympathetic to communism, though not necessarily a Communist Party member. The term has its origins in the notion that pink is a lighter shade of red, the color associated with communism; thus pink could be thought of as a “lighter form of communism” promoted by supporters of socialism who weren’t, themselves, “card-carrying” communists.”

I heard a rumour about who this latest comedian is. So, I thought I’d google the name. The suggested search terms provided by Google confirmed I had the right name. So, are they going to charge GOOGLE???!!!!!

Jacob January 6, 2010 at 11:41 am

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

And I had only entered “First Surname” when it started suggesting “charged”, “kids”, “charges”, etc, after the name. True the intent is arguably not there, although there is intent to communicate the terms, but is still amusing.

Conversely, I searched for the “entertainers” name, (only the name, didn’t add terms), and saw absolutely nothing on the first five pages of Google results suggesting any crime or name supression.

Did you actually search just the name, or did you accept the suggested terms for your results.

Of course, with forums full of people guessing whom it might be, all sorts of people might be turning up those searches now. I just searched for a “comedian” whom I know is *not* the one in question, followed by “name suppression”, and while what I found wasn’t compelling, it’d be enough to get some of the more easily excited types going off half-cocked.

You are right that sometimes other comedian names may come up with similar suggestions. But, I still find it amusing that if you suspect First Surname is the person, and you go to google, and start typing in their name, Google preempts you and suggests terms ‘First Surname charges’, ‘First Surname suppression’ and so on. I did not even need to click Search before these were suggested.

I just wondered if the fact that this has spiked interst in your blog and in the identity of the various proven or charged miscreants would now mean the piggies have to charge themselves, since their definition of “assisting in the identification of a person with name suppression” would definitely now apply to their deliberate decision to charge you and their omission of any attempt to suppress details of yourself or the case.
Keep up the good work and ignore the small minds of the insects who think this is about the rights of one or other of the deviants and murderers the Police have now drawn attention to.
