I note in the news that the US is again reacting to a terror alert by shutting the gate after the horse has bolted. These actions are only pissing people off and won’t do anything to halt a determined terrorist.
My solution however is far better. It stops terrorism dead in its track, literally.
Just issue every passenger and every crew member with a Glock 25 (simple easy to use with little or no training) and one bullet. One bullet isn’t enough to hijack a plane and the terrorist if he/she tries will be filled with lead in about 20 seconds by the other 200 passengers. The Glock 25 is in .380 Auto which is compact and light, but has a relatively short range and less stopping power than other modern pistol cartridges. it generates only 1000 f/ps (300 m/s) muzzle velocity compare that with the traditional 9mm which generates 435 m/s (1,430 ft/s). That difference is big enough to put holes in terrorists but unlikely to penetrate an airliner cabin. You could use a .22lr pistol but with a hyped up terrorist that just might only make him angry.
You could incorporate how to shoot terrorists into the pre-flight briefing, somewhere after the seat-belt and life-jacket explanation.
The pistols can be handed in at the end of the flight as passengers leave the aircraft.
To show how easy they are to use watch these videos as a shooter loads and racks the slide with only one hand, so even cripples could do it.

what happens if 20 hijackers all board the same plane? They’d be able to take over the plane – after all most passengers in the plane are too remote to them to get a shot off. In fact the hail of bullets you’d unleash on a flight from Texas to Alabama would probably be enough to bring the plane down or at least kill everyone on board in the crossfire.
And no point issuing my grandmother with a glock – she’d just hand it over to the first person that asked her for it. And why wouldn’t a terrorist just get a window seat, pop the window at 35000 feet with his one bullet and be done with it that way?
The only workable answer is El Al style profiling but that will never work in the US because the airlines are too cheap and Homeland Security too bureaucratic and incompetent.

I have an even better soltion, albeit a longer term one that would hopefully fix part of the cause of extremism.
The West needs to stem the tide of Islamic immigration as a matter of immediate priorty. Islam and Western culture and values do not mix, as proven in many European towns and cities where there are enclaves of radicalised muslims, who have no desire to assimilate. The present dire situation will only worsen if we still let them in. On the flip side, we should also stay out of the middle east and north africa, and they can fight to their hearts content. If we do both of those things, they should have no reason to want to blow us up.

I agree kiwireader..the problem is islamic immigration and subsequent non integration…but obama is a muslim..by muslim tradition his father was a muslim so he is one..No church service for the Obamas this Christmas , organized stupid ball making before Christmas..big fuss over ramadan etc..
My husband comes from an islamic country..living there for a number of years turned me into a nationalist and made me extremely anti-jihadists…The very sad problem with NZ today is that people are so naive it is almost indescribable. Egyptian Christians living here say that NZ will be an absolute push over for the muslims..Aussies say the same thing…They simply cannot believe NZ’s collective naivety..but then all of these items are totally played town in our news papers.
I personally know of two terrorist type situations in ChCh..one happened at the same time as 9/11…the other some time later when the cops went to the tech and hauled a student out of a classroom and took her straight to the airport…Most NZers would not believe these things are happening here…

There are numerous advantages to this briliant plan;
1. Lighter load means less fuel used.. Pleases the greentards
2. A lot less foood will be eaten, I always get sat next to people who make me sick, a lot less eating will occur. Please the greentards for reason 1 and the fact that less meat will get eaten.
3. The airlines will have to expand business class (nobody wants to sity near the tracksuit wearing mongs in cattle) and will all return to profitability.

sorry, kiwireader, but stopping islamic immigration won’t stop people already in n.z. from converting. make some illegal and the only thing that is affected is its allure. i can imagine lots of the bros growing beards and hailing a mystic sky-god five times a day.
the answer’s that there’s no answer. sorry to be defeatist, but extremists exist among us now in all number of guises. trying to retrospectively limit their movement to and from enzed won’t achieve a damned thing.
getting wise to our natural tendancies would probably be a start. terrorism is really just inspired group-think. start teaching kids to be more individualistic and you’ll reduce their predisposition toward communal dependency. currently, the kids are learning ‘leadership’ comes from others, like the government or other so-called symbols of authority. teach the little tykes that the secret to living happily is living freely and independently and these jihadists won’t have little kiwi minds to fuck with.

rawha, you have a good point re those already in New Zealand. However, I think stopping the immigration of those from Islamic countries would go a long way stifling the potential development of extremists in NZ.
It is ONLY because of our relatively small numbers of Muslims that we don’t have the same troubles (yet) as other countries (read Australia, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, USA, France, Denmark, Sweden, etc etc). The more that reside here, the more kids they have, the more family and relatives they bring in, and the more our potential for trouble increases exponentially. It has happened in every other Western country of any significance, so there is nothing to suggest the same thing won’t happen here when they reach a critical population mass, whatever that is.
As for people converting in NZ, there will always be deranged people doing daft things, but we don’t need to encourage them by giving them role models.
Remember, with Muslims the buck stops with the Koran, not our laws. I respect their right to believe that, but not in our country.

Yes kiwi reader , history in other countries tells us they start acting up when they get to about 10 per cent of the population and then it is all down hill from there. There is the issue of breeding once they are here..all that tax payer funded maternity care…In ChCh , they opened a new womens hospital with great fanfare. In no time at all , the new hospital was too small…Why? Noone quite wants to answer that question but I can tell you why. There are all these muslim women having 7/8/9/10 children…soon ChCh will be like Holland where the muslim push chair brigade roll their pushchairs over the feet of the elderly Dutch. They also demand special treatment which puts a lot of strain on already stretched hospital staff. The Canterbury DHB is 58 million in debt…They have been slashing services to the elderly but I haven’t heard any mention of people choosing to have more than four or five children having to pay for maternity care.
Rawha…Maori and Aborigine have been deliberately targeted…as have Fijians , Tongans etc…Malaysia is a major centre for islamic missionary training. They have been heading out into the Pacific for years…Brazil is also now a big field of opportunity for them..

Transport Safety Administration. They had to get the government to take over airport screening as the private companies were breathtakingly incompetent.
In this case the guy was screened in Amsterdam ( supposedly).
As for arming the passengers, they allready do that with trained air marshalls who are ingognito.
That is they way to do it.
Otherwise there are far more mentally ill people than terrorists ( similar thinking). see our last ‘hijacking’ and the crazy Somali woman. Is she wandering our airports as we speak ?

I don’t think anyone knows that there are definetly more mentally ill people than terrorists..Here in NZ , mentally ill people rate so lowly that very poor statistics are kept about them.
There are potentially millions of terroists if not actual fall guys, the puppet masters behind them and those who celebrate their successes however small. The guys behind this had been let out of Gitmo , done their stint in Saudi art therapy classes and then carried on with their sacred intent. The guy arrested was some impressionable fool.
